Behind the scenes with Guido Henning of E-Craft

by on Jul.26, 2012, under Spotlight

Guido Henning performing at Kinetik Festival 5

Guido Henning may not be an immediately recognizable name in the industrial music scene but his music project will certainly ring a few bells for the more seasoned rivet heads. E-Craft is a project Guido started in the mid nineties and, with various members, the project is surviving the test of time. (continue reading…)

Artist: Sleetgrout
Album: We Had a Carnival
Label: Shadowplay Records
Review by: Outsider (aka Adrian Onsen)

Releasing an album earlier in 2012 Sleetgrout totally caught me by surprise. Here is another industrial band out of Russia.
I had only heard the title track “Get rid of this life” on the Communion After Dark podcast, and it caught my attention. I wanted to hear more. (continue reading…)

News : Event Calendar Update

by on Jun.29, 2012, under News

I need your help.

In order for this open calendar project to be useful to everyone in our scene we need two things:
1. We need to to populate the calendar with events.
2. We need to spread the word about its existence.

The more locations we can cover, and the more people know about it, the  more people can find it useful.

So if you’ve ever been in a situation where you were wondering if there are any events going on in your city on the coming weekend or the coming month, please consider helping us out.
Even by submitting one event or by telling one friend about our site/calendar, you are likely making a difference in getting people out to events in out scene.
——–
In other news the Event Calendar can now accept anonymous event submissions on the Event Calendar Submissions page.

All submitted events are held for approval before being posted to the event calendar and the system will email you once your event is approved. So get submitting!

Events are not limited to any geographical region, so feel free to post events from around the globe.

If you are an event promoter or have a lot of regular events to post, I can set up a contributor account for you on the site so you can submit and edit your events. Contact me at info [at] mechanicalnation.com

Behind the scenes with Pete Crane of Shiv-r

by on Jun.26, 2012, under Spotlight

Pete Crane performing at Kinetik Festival 5

“We love to create worlds.” Pete told me.
“The rejection of the world with which we’re presented; a world in which we’re encouraged to go to work, not do anything creative, be a consumer…We say fuck all that. “
“A great point.” I think to myself.
He’s on a roll and enthusiastically continues.
“We (Shiv-r) spend all of our spare time and energy building a new fucking world as we see fit. Build something, especially if it’s daunting and scares you at first.  Fucking create something and become whatever you want.”
This is the energy that drives Shiv-r.

Moving to London, England in 2007, was an eye opening experience for Pete in terms of what the industrial/goth scene was like in Europe. He played live keyboards for Angelspit in a couple of festivals and was amazed to see the size of the crowds that the festivals gathered. Coming from venues in Australia that packed 50-200 people he was now in front of audiences of numbers that rivaled mainstream bands. (continue reading…)

News : Event Calendar (beta)

by on Jun.25, 2012, under News

I have added a new section to the website; an Event Calendar.

The goal behind this new feature is to have one point of information for all industrial music events going on in North America (maybe one day the whole world). Since the calendar has capability to filter by location (country, state/province, city) anyone anywhere on this planet should be able to find out what is happening in their town, pretty easily.
I know I find myself missing local events (both concerts and club nights) just because there’s no one place that has everything listed. Hopefully if this tool works and is kept up to date, it will solve the same problem for others as well.

To start I will only be keeping track of local events as I don’t have any good sources of events from other locations (unless I get some good help to events outsize my geographic area).

Both concerts and club nights will be added to the event calendar as they are both events that I’d want to know about attending.

I do want to put out a call for help from event organizers (or people in the know) to help me populate and keep this tool up to date. Send me an email to info@mechanicalnation.com
Pass this message along to anyone that you think may be able to help.

News : Site organization

by on Jun.15, 2012, under News

I’ve made some changes to how the site is organized.

The main (home) page will not display the Daily Digest Items (Podcasts and New Album Releases) anymore. Those items can be accessed from the menu up top under the Daily Digest Items menu. I found that the regular content posts get buried in the daily updates the site generates automatically.

The RSS feed will still display ALL the content as will the Facebook Page. Those do not get the filtered view. Only the site gets the filtered view.

A new site design is still in the works but finding time to code it has been tough. The biggest change will be in the way the users will be able to interact with the large amounts of content (podcasts and new album releases) posted daily.
When it’s ready you will all know. The interface is vastly different. If you’d like to contribute some ‘beta’ testing time and give me some input on the new design, send me a line.

Album Review : Homeland Insecurity by FGFC820

by on Jun.14, 2012, under Album Reviews

Artist: FGFC820
Album: Homeland Insecurities
Review by: Outsider (aka Adrian Onsen)

I must admit that FGFC820 is new to me.The only thing I knew of FGFC820 was the performances I saw at Kinetik for the past 2 years (when I attended). My impression was that Rexx Arkana had a military and political message to convey (through the military beats, uniform that he wears on stage, and political commentary between the songs) but never really connected with it. Musically I enjoyed the stompy beats and harsh vocals, but that was the extent of it.

Until the other day when Rexx offered me a copy of his latest album Homeland Insecurity to do a review of. I accepted it but to be honest, I felt a little awkward as I didn’t know how I was going to write about the music I had only heard so little of.  (continue reading…)
