Behind the scenes with Michael Holloway of Dead When I Found Her

by on Jan.16, 2013, under Spotlight

dwifh-smDead When I Found Her is the project of Michael Arthur Holloway. The music project started some time ago when he turned 30 years old. Michael’s musical direction with the DWIFH project was very specific.  He had been writing and recording music for a long time but was always restless; jumping from idea to idea. In his younger years he admitted to a lack discipline. He lacked the ability to commit to a project and see it through to the end.
“I had years during my twenties when the only music I worked on was guitar-based indie rock stuff. I had periods where my only musical output was scoring local short-films my friends made. My attention span always wandered.” Michael said.
After returning home from South America, he felt that a new leaf needed to be turned in his musical expression, and was ready to pursue one musical project and see it all the way through. He felt the discipline and the ability to organize his ambitions into something cohesive was there. And the musical choice for Michael was singular; it had to be an old-school industrial band. News : Album Releases Updates working again and new site

by on Jan.08, 2013, under News

For the past little while the daily New Album Releases have not been so daily and has been scant on releases.
That has now been fixed.
Later today (at the regular post time of 3pm EST) a list of nearly 30 releases since the beginning of 2013 will be posted, and then daily updates will follow.

In other news, I am working on a new website design which will make for consuming all the daily update data much simpler. Both the New Album Releases and the Podcasts updates will get their own widget on the site and will consolidate all the data in one spot.

You can view the work in progress site at http://beta.mechanicalnation.com
I would appreciate any feedback you may have as I shape the look and usability of the new site. Contact me at info@mechanicalnation.com

Thank you.

New Podcasts Added

by on Oct.19, 2012, under News

I would like to welcome three new podcasts to our list:

DarkCompass is a weekly show out of the UK, and features both a mix of industrial/EBM as well as other more mainstream and indie acts. The host Rowley, has been producing weekly shows since 2004.

The Ungodly Hour is a great 3 hour industrial/EBM podcast produced by rE\dOx. This weekly show features a lot of interesting editorial content as well for the geek in all of us. This is another long running show having been around since 2003.

Synthesize me – Your weekly synthesized soundtrack is an synthpop/EBM podcast out of Israel. Oren Amram’s show mixes 10 awesome tracks on a weekly basis.

I would like to thank the people that have brought these shows to my attention. You know who you are!

If you know of any shows that I’m currently not following here on Mechanical Nation, please send me an email and let me know.

Album Review : Rag Doll Blues by Dead When I Found Her

by on Oct.11, 2012, under Album Reviews

Artist: Dead When I Found Her
Album: Rag Doll Blues
Review by: Outsider (aka Adrian Onsen)

Dark, emotional, atmospheric, layered, melodic, film-noir; just a few words that come to mind while listening the new DWIFH (Dead When I Found Her) second full length album, Rag Doll Blues.
The goal of the DWIFH project is to explore the late 80’s early 90’s electro industrial style of music which is seldom found these days. In that context I have to congratulate Michael for stepping up and nailing that style. Michael Holloway’s vocals are clean, powerful and haunting at times and the copious use of samples compliment wonderfully his voice and the story that each song unveils. The balance between vocal and instrumental ingredients is continuously adjusted for a most powerful impact. The elaborate use of samples, and distinct attention to layering is reminiscent of early FLA and Skinny Puppy albums. Some of the samples are down scary, not because they feature people screaming in horror. But because of the imagery they construct in the listener’s mind, which for me is much more powerful and lasting.

I think the reason I fell in love with this album is because of the throw back to the industrial music I loved when I started listening to industrial music in the early to mid 90’s. It has an analog feel to it (it’s not overly electronic sounding) from the drums to the synths. A refreshing sound in a time when a lot of releases in the industrial scene today tend to focus on the dance floor beats, distorted vocals and digital and electronic sounds.

For me this is a brilliant album. Dark, complex and melodic. One to climb into a comfortable chair with, turn the lights down and let the imagination drift into another world shaped by the aural experience.

Behind the scenes with Rexx and Dräcos of FGFC820

by on Aug.22, 2012, under Spotlight

“When you meet new people and asked what you do Rexx, do you tell them you work on Wall Street or do you tell them you’re in a band?” I asked Rexx.
“I generally say I work on Wall Street because if I say I’m in a band, they’ll want to know which one. I find the faces they make when I say FGFC820 sometimes entertaining.” Rexx responded with a smile.

FGFC820 is the musical project of Rexx Arkana and Dräcos von Strecker out of New York city. The project which started in 2004 evolved before settling on it’s current members. Rexx originally planned on working with Mika from This Morn’s Omina and in fact the first song FGFC820 written as a band (World of God) was written by Rexx and Mika. However collaboration was difficult with an ocean between them, and when Dräcos started helping with the remixes he pretty much took over for Mika. (continue reading…)

Spotlight: “Time:Wave” podcast

by on Aug.07, 2012, under Spotlight

As much as I love the industrial music, I’ve lately been drawn more and more to editorial content about the scene and it’s contributors (see other editorials in the Spotlight category).

Our friends at COMA music magazine (specifically Tiffany) have started a fantastic new podcast  called Time:Wave which focuses on the history and facts about selected bands in the industrial scene.

The first episode focuses on Skinny Puppy and Tiffany does an excellent job of covering everything you never knew about the band, it’s past and it’s members. What a welcome addition to the already excellent podcast lineup that COMA Magazine already has.

I am certainly looking forward to the next episode as they will be featuring … Well, you’ll have to listen to this episode of Time:Wave to find out.
:)
