It seems Toronto, Canada keeps bringing out more and more industrial music artists these days. Cory and Andrew have been working on the Volt9000 project for quite some time now. They self-released their first album back in 2010 and have diligently been releasing a new album each year since, making “Conopoly” their 4th release.

The album has a lot of influences from the early industrial music era. You can hear the subtle Skinny Puppy influences throughout the album along with heavy use of samples. And not just sampled speech, but actual sampled sounds used as instruments. Along with unexplainable clicks, bops and beep sounds taken from god knows where, there is creative use of samples that create melodies and drive songs; rare these days in industrial music.
Not to oversimplify the sound Volt9000 brings to the table, I can’t get over the intricate and elaborate compositions this album packs in every track. The rich and deeply layered sounds are meticulously crafted for a beautiful listening experience. I’m a sucker for complex and layered soundscapes, and this album delivers on that front by the bucketful.
Unique is also the continuity of feel throughout the album. Though each song is distinct in its character, there is something that binds the album as a whole. Maybe it’s the vocals, maybe it’s the samples. All I know is that sound has grown on me tremendously.
The energy of the album is more suited for listening in your living room then the dance floor. I didn’t feel the need to shake my boodie but rather relished every moment of the rich and powerful aural journey.

A solid release by Volt9000.
